PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Portland City Council rejected a proposal on Wednesday to cut funding from a program that clears homeless camps from public spaces.
Councilor Angelita Morillo introduced an amendment that would have cut more than $4 million from multiple departments that help with the sweeps of homeless camps and redirected $2 million of that money to food assistance and housing grants.
The amendment sparked pushback from the mayor, other councilors and Portland residents who testified at the Wednesday meeting.
The amendment to the city budget would have cut funding for the Impact Reduction Program that is responsible for organizing sweeps and clearing homeless camps and garbage from public spaces.
