A QUICK-thinking landholder and fire crews have averted a potential disaster in Tamworth after a fire erupted on the edge of the CBD.
Fire and Rescue NSW as well as the local Rural Fire Service (RFS) raced to the fire on a property on King George Avenue about lunchtime on Thursday, November 13.
Authorities are investigating whether a spark from machinery could have ignited the blaze which took off in the windy conditions and dry long grass shortly after 1pm.
Firefighters worked together with the landholder to stop the spread of flames and prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby paddocks where horses were being housed.
The Tamworth Regional Council area is under a high fire danger rating on Thursday because of predicted gusty conditions.
