MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. (KWQC) - The community in Mount Carroll celebrated the grand opening of Shimer Square on Wednesday, marking the transformation of the former Shimer College campus into a mixed-use development.
The multi-phase redevelopment will turn the campus into a mixed-use community that will bring new housing, jobs and long-term economic vitality to the area, according to a media release.
“This campus holds a profound history, and today it opens a new chapter, one filled with opportunity and hope,” Kristin Faust, executive director of the housing development authority, said in the release. “It offers families a place to thrive and sets the foundation for investment that will echo for generations.”
The first phase brings 51 apartments to former buildings on campus, officials said
