Of all the questions surrounding the fatal shooting of Maria Florinda Rios Pérez, let’s not lose sight of the most obvious one that applies to us all: When did an early-morning knock on the door become a threat?

Rios Pérez, 32, a mother of four, arrived Nov. 5 at the wrong address to clean a home in Whitestown, Indiana. Moments later, she was dead, shot from inside the house. Police have not named the shooter. The Boone County prosecutor is reviewing the case to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

Indiana’s castle doctrine was meant to protect residents from forced entry and grave danger, not justify firing on someone simply standing outside. The law requires reasonableness. So should we.
