The cost of a crucial treatment for a deadly cancer will drop from nearly $13,000 a month to just $25 a month after it was added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
Those with multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer, would previously pay up to $150,000 for their first year of treatment using a product called Darzalex.
Around 2600 Australians are diagnosed with the disease each year, with 1100 dying, leaving only a 55 per cent rate of survival.
With the addition of Darzalex to the PBS, the price of a prescription will fall to just $7.70 for those with a concession card and $31.60 per month for general patients.
The price will then drop to $25 on January 1 next year.
Doctors say the decision by the federal government will be a huge help in the fight against the deadly cance
