ARVADA — Every goal feels like a prayer when only four teams remain in the soccer state playoffs, but for 110 minutes at the North Area Athletic Complex on Wednesday night, neither No. 2 Jefferson Academy nor No. 3 Steamboat Springs could get off an “Amen.”

Not even sudden death would do before Steamboat Springs won 4-3 in penalty kicks. The score leading up to that moment held firm at 0-0, before the Sailors ended JA’s season just one game short of a return trip to the Class 3A state championship.

Two seasons ago, the Jaguars couldn’t win a single game. Last year, they finished state runner-up behind Holy Family, who beat them with a golden goal.

These cats are hard to take down this late in the season.
