BATAVIA — With 4,500 people receiving food stamps in Genesee County, the local Department of Social Services is doing its part to make sure they receive their benefits while federal lawmakers work out details to end the 43-day government shutdown.
“Essentially, in New York right now, pending litigation due to the shutdown on whether or not states can distribute full SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to individuals, the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance made the decision to issue full benefits to New Yorkers while the litigation is still pending,” said Carla Mindler, Genesee County DSS commissioner.
