The Calcutta High Court on Thursday disqualified Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy from the West Bengal Legislative Assembly under the anti-defection law.
A division bench headed by Justice Debangsu Basak delivered the verdict while hearing petitions filed by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and BJP MLA Ambika Roy. The court ruled that Roy’s membership stood cancelled as he had violated the anti-defection provisions.
Roy was elected to the Assembly on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket in May 2021 but switched to the ruling TMC just three months later, in August, in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
