MADRID — What Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is to a lot of young, aspiring quarterbacks who are Polynesian or from Hawaii, Marcus Mariota once was to Tagovailoa.
Both born in Hawaii and even attending the same high school in Honolulu, Saint Louis, Tagovailoa, 27, had a poster at home in his adolescent years of Mariota, 32.
The two quarterbacks with similar backgrounds will finally face off as starters in an NFL game when the Dolphins (3-7) go against Mariota’s Washington Commanders (3-7) halfway around the world from where they grew up.
Their teams are playing the league’s first game in Spain, a 9:30 a.m. kickoff Sunday from Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid.
