(CNN) - Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson is in the hospital.
The Rainbow Push Coalition, which was founded by Jackson, said the 84-year-old is under observation for progressive supranuclear palsy, a neurodegenerative condition he was diagnosed with last year.
Jackson has been dealing with symptoms of the disease for more than a decade.
Many people with it suffer from balance issues and an inability to aim their eyes properly.
Jackson rose to the national stage in the 1960s by advocating for racial equity, economic justice and voter rights.
He worked closely with Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., and was considered one of his proteges.
The exact nature of his hospitalization is not known.
