BLOOMINGTON ― Confidence is a word that's been attached to Duncan Combs like his No. 2 jersey since he arrived as a freshman two years ago.
The Bloomington South quarterback was handed the JV starting spot back then and promised the Panthers coaches they wouldn't lose a game. They didn't, decking every team on their schedule.
Combs was given the reins to the varsity squad last year, and in his second game, led South on two fourth-quarter scoring drives, including an 80-yarder to score the go-ahead TD with 44 seconds left. Martinsville still won that game, but Combs announced his arrival as a fierce competitor who comes through in the clutch.
