Costco opened its new West Winnipeg warehouse at 6:30 a.m. Thursday, drawing early-morning crowds to the Westport development near Assiniboia Downs. The 166,984-square-foot store sits just off the Perimeter Highway and Portage Avenue and replaces the former St. James location, which closed this week.

Construction of the warehouse began earlier this year on roughly 70 acres of land within the mixed-use Westport project. Costco representatives said the site was selected to improve access for shoppers in western Winnipeg and nearby communities while easing pressure on other city warehouses known for heavy traffic and full parking lots.
