As Bihar awaits the counting of votes for the assembly elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Sunil Singh has issued a stark warning to election officials. He cautioned that any manipulation of the election results could lead to protests similar to those seen in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Singh's remarks come just before the results are announced, and he expressed concern over the integrity of the electoral process, referencing past incidents where RJD candidates were allegedly defeated unfairly in 2020.
"Many of our candidates were forcibly defeated in 2020. I have requested all our officials involved in the counting process that, if you defeat the person whom the public has given their mandate, the same scenes you witnessed on the roads in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka will be seen on the roads of Bihar as well," Singh stated. He emphasized the need for vigilance and urged officials not to act against public sentiment, warning that the common people would take to the streets if their mandate was disregarded.
Singh expressed confidence in the RJD's performance, predicting that the party would secure between 140 and 160 seats and form the next government under the leadership of Tejashwi Yadav. Following his comments, the Bihar Director General of Police ordered an FIR against Singh for making an inflammatory statement.
The political atmosphere in Bihar remains tense as exit polls suggest a strong possibility of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retaining power. Polls indicate that the NDA could win between 121 and 141 seats, while the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan is projected to secure between 98 and 118 seats. The majority mark in the 243-member assembly is 122 seats.
The counting of votes is set to take place on November 14, with results expected to be announced the same evening. This election marks a significant moment as it follows a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, the first of its kind in two decades. The RJD has been vocal about its readiness to contest any perceived irregularities during the counting process, asserting that the people of Bihar are committed to upholding democracy and the Constitution.
