President Donald Trump has signed a government funding bill, ending a record 43-day shutdown that caused financial stress for federal workers who went without paychecks, stranded scores of travelers at airports and generated long lines at some food banks.

At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Steve Monroe, a retired CDC worker was on site to offer his support to returning workers, saying their work is important. He held a sign thanking CDC workers.

" I think for a lot of people, they don't think government work is important. But they just don't realize what goes on and how impactful it can be."
