“Know thyself” is one of my favorite and self-obsessed mantras. Sometimes it’s fun and reassuring. Today it was, well, gray.

I’ll start with waking up, never with an alarm, and always fairly early.

This morning, it was after a decent night’s sleep. So far, so average.

As is my usual routine, I turned on a morning show, which one is irrelevant. Between some grim national and local news, and the weather forecast, I started feeling, well, gray.

Why? Because, for the first time, more than a week into November, I realized I was looking at the next five months, which I don’t really enjoy.

Several columns back, I wrote that September and October are my favorite times of the year. Now I’m in a different zone.
