After an expanding outbreak of infant botulism, a recall was been issued Tuesday for ByHeart infant formula. At least 15 babies were sickened and hospitalized after consuming the formula.
Stephen Dexter’s daughter was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Phoenix to receive care.
SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Dexter, parent:
She was declining. She was refusing the bottle, and my thought was that she just needed to drink and eat. And that's why she was losing her weakness, but she was getting more weak. But then I came home from work and she was sleeping and went to pick her up to feed her and I couldn't wake her up. She was breathing, but she just, she wouldn't wake up, so we packed the car and went to the to the emergency room.
SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Dexter, parent:
He said, at that point, that there was two options. One was a form of muscular dystrophy. The other was botulism.
The parents of at least two babies are suing the makers of the By Heart baby formula
SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Dexter, parent:
I have to trust what's on the label, I have to trust where I'm getting it.
SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Dexter, parent:
Our child doesn't seem to have any lasting effects, so there's hope in that sense. You know, the one mistake I made was I wish I had taken her to the doctor and insisted to look a little closer, a little sooner.
