The Liberal Party’s rejection of the net zero emissions by 2050 target marks a major turning point in the Coalition’s climate and energy policy.
Following the decision to drop the policy on Thursday, shadow energy minister Dan Tehan declared the party's new focus was squarely on delivering cheaper, more reliable power for Australian households.
While the Opposition did reject Labor’s net zero targets, the Liberal Party will maintain in-principle support for achieving net zero - without locking targets into law.
