The U.S. Mint has pressed its last pennies, ending production of the 1-cent coin. On Wednesday, the U.S. ended 232 years after the first penny was made.

“God bless America, and we’re going to save the taxpayers $56 million,” Treasurer Brandon Beach said at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia before striking the final penny ever made.

Staff at the U.S. Mint watched along and cheered as the final pennies came off the line. Despite the end of production, it’s estimated that billions of pennies remain in circulation. The coin will continue to be accepted as legal tender.

“It’s an emotional day,” said Clayton Crotty, who has worked at the mint for 15 years. “But it’s not unexpected.”
