DARE COUNTY, N.C. — A Wanchese man was arrested Friday following an incident in which an animal was killed by gunfire, authorities said.

On November 8 at approximately 6 p.m., Dare Central Communications received a report of a missing animal. Deputies from the Dare County Sheriff’s Office responded and contacted Dare County Animal Control. An investigation determined that 57-year-old Britton T. Shackelford discharged a firearm, resulting in the animal’s death.

The District Attorney’s Office was notified and consulted on the case. Law enforcement obtained a warrant for Shackelford’s arrest, and he was taken into custody at the Dare County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.
