A host of Canberra public schools will be closed today, November 14, due to a safety concern.

A recall notice issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission identified a decorative, coloured sand - Kadink Decorative Sand - as containing traces of chrysotile asbestos. The product is used at some educational facilities as part of sensory play, and arts and crafts.

WorkSafe ACT identified the risk of exposure to traces of chrysotile as low, with the school closures allowing for testing and remediation. The decision to close the schools was made on the advice of WorkSafe ACT and in line with Education Directorate processes.
