August Wilson House’s Legacy Brick Program serves as a symbol of support for Black-led cultural institutions across the city of Pittsburgh, says its director.
At a press conference Thursday morning, executive director Denise Turner and Mayor Ed Gainey underscored the importance of preserving the beauty and culture of the Black community and the Pittsburgh-born playwright’s legacy.
“Because that is exactly what August Wilson was about: providing access where there was none, and highlighting the diversity and talent of Black people,” Ms. Turner said.
“We don’t honor our culture when we should honor it,” Mr. Gainey said. “The reality is August Wilson was a great man that comes out of the Hill District, and his ability to tell the story about our city is unbelievable.”
