Cristiano Ronaldo was left red-faced after he was sent off during Portugal’s crunch World Cup qualifying clash against Republic of Ireland.

The Boys in Green took a shock 2-0 lead in the first-half with Troy Parrott scoring a brace to put the home side in control and keep their qualifying hopes alive.

Ronaldo was given his marching orders in the 62nd minute, initially shown a yellow card after swinging an elbow at defender Dara O’Shea.

The 40-year-old was spotted making a crying gesture in the direction of O’Shea and the Irish supporters.

But his tune quickly changed after referee Glenn Nyberg was instructed by VAR to review the decision.
