LOCKPORT, N.Y. — The Niagara County Department of Health on Thursday confirmed a case of rabies in a raccoon found in the Town of Lockport.

The raccoon, which was submitted for testing on Nov. 7, had an encounter with a dog on Old Dysinger Road a day before. No human exposure was reported.

According to the department, the dog involved in the incident was not current on its rabies vaccination. Officials said the animal "received a booster shot immediately following the encounter" and will now undergo a six-month quarantine.

The Niagara County Department of Health said it will continue to monitor the dog’s condition, noting it will "follow up with the owner during the quarantine period to confirm the dog remains in good health."
