DETROIT — A judge in Detroit is facing a public complaint filed against him by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission after he allegedly detained and handcuffed a student who was visiting his courtroom as part of a class field trip.
The incident occurred on Aug. 13, 2024, when a group of high school students was visiting the courtroom of Judge Kenneth J. King, judge of the 36th District Court in Detroit.
As a part of the field trip, King was to speak to the students about court functions and operations. According to court documents, while giving this presentation, King stepped off the bench and removed his judicial robe. The court was not in session while he gave this presentation.
