London: The BBC has apologised to US President Donald Trump over an edited video that sparked a furore over the public broadcaster’s editorial standards and led to the sudden resignations of its director-general and head of news.
The apology was part of a formal admission by the BBC about the mistakes in a documentary that combined two parts of a speech to convey the impression that Trump urged his supporters to “fight like hell” against the US Congress at the January 6 protests four years ago.
The BBC’s move came 24 hours before the deadline Trump and his personal lawyers have set for a $1.5 billion defamation claim against the British institution over the documentary, suggesting it is willing to give ground to avoid a damaging legal dispute.
