Affordability was the Democrats’ winning theme in last week’s state and local elections, notably the New York City mayoral race. Their message was that for all of President Donald Trump’s braggadocio and lies, prices for food, energy, housing and health care are going up along with inflation and unemployment, and we can’t afford it.
Trump ridiculed the Democrat’s message, likely because it worked so well for them, and he particularly targeted Zohran Mamdani, the next mayor of New York City. Mamdani is a 34-year-old Muslim immigrant from Uganda, a strident critic of Israel and supporter of the Palestinian cause. Trump and Republicans want to make him the poster boy for the Democrats in next year’s congressional elections.
