A Virginia home was fully engulfed in flames during a massive fire on Thursday, hours after officials warned that dry, windy weather could cause flames to rapidly spread.
Firefighters from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue raced to the 1900 block of Hunter Mill Road in Vienna early in the afternoon on Nov. 13, where units arrived to “heavy fire showing throughout the home,” according to the department.
The fire tore through the structure, fully engulfing the home as crews launched fire suppression and search and rescue operations.
A dramatic photo from the scene showed flames shooting several stories high, consuming nearly the entire house as firefighters attacked the blaze.
The department confirmed that two people were evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries. No firefighter injuries were reported.
Shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, the department declared the fire under control.
The fire came just hours after Fairfax County Fire and Rescue issued a public warning about “elevated fire danger today,” citing dry conditions, gusty winds, low humidity, and wind gusts of around 25 mph to 30 mph, increasing the risk for rapid fire spread.
In the alert, the department cautioned residents:
- “Don’t toss cigarette butts or matches”
- “Avoid using equipment that can spark”
- “Keep vehicles off dry grass.”
The fire’s cause remains under investigation.
