LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A former Michigan high school soccer ref has been formally charged with assaulting a teen during a match last month.
The incident happened on Oct. 14 during an MHSAA Division 2 district soccer match between Traverse City St. Francis and Gaylord at the Traverse Bay Area Youth Soccer Field.
A now-viral video on social media shows 64-year-old referee Randall Smith running along the sidelines and following the play before running into a 16-year-old near the bench. Reports say the teen was a manager for the Gaylord team.
Smith raised his flag as if he was about to hit the teen, before grabbing him by the shirt and pushing him over the bench.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Traverse City Post responded to the scene shortly after the incident.
