Maryland Republicans in the General Assembly announced plans to introduce legislation to counter Gov. Wes Moore’s redistricting proposal, saying their bill would create “fair maps” and prohibit mid-cycle redistricting.

Last week, Moore announced a new advisory commission to hold public hearings and gather input from residents before making recommendations to the governor and legislature. The governor said the panel’s goal is to keep Maryland’s congressional maps fair and representative.

Republican leaders say Moore’s plan is politically motivated and could allow Democrats to redraw districts in the middle of the decade.
