Bihar is set to witness the counting of votes for its assembly elections today, which will determine if Chief Minister Nitish Kumar can secure a record fifth term. The counting process will begin at 8 am, with postal ballots being counted first, followed by electronic voting machine (EVM) votes from 8.30 am. The Election Commission has established 46 counting centres across 38 districts, equipped with 4,372 counting tables and overseen by over 18,000 counting agents.
The state recorded a historic voter turnout of 67.13% in the elections held on November 6 and 11, with 7.45 crore voters casting their ballots for 2,616 candidates. The NDA coalition, which includes JD(U), BJP, and other parties, is hoping to retain power, while the opposition 'Mahagathbandhan', led by Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD, aims to unseat them.
Tejashwi Yadav has urged his supporters to remain vigilant during the counting process, stating, "The justice-loving people of Bihar... are alert, vigilant, cautious, and fully capable... to deal with any kind of improper unconstitutional activity." He expressed confidence that the Mahagathbandhan would form the next government.
In contrast, BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal dismissed the opposition's concerns, asserting that the NDA government believes in the rule of law and is prepared for a peaceful counting process. He stated, "The public has made up its mind to bring the NDA government back to power."
As the counting unfolds, the Election Commission has implemented strict security measures, including a double-lock system for EVMs and CCTV surveillance at counting centres. Results will be updated on the EC's official portal, and the commission has advised the public to rely solely on this source for accurate information.
By noon, the fate of Bihar's political landscape will be clearer, revealing whether Nitish Kumar continues his winning streak or if Tejashwi Yadav can claim victory in this high-stakes election.
