SALT LAKE CITY — After a contentious ruling was made this week that selected a new congressional map for Utah, two Democrats have now announced their plans to run for the seat at the center of the controversy.

The state’s 1st District in Salt Lake County is literally at the center of the map , but figuratively, it’s the district that GOP lawmakers intended to split apart. The district represents the highest population of Democratic votes, and new candidates have said they expect it to be a competitive spot.

State Sen. Kathleen Riebe, D-Cottonwood Heights, announced her candidacy Wednesday morning, which was quickly followed by an announcement by former Rep. Ben McAdams , who said he too will run for the seat, which is currently held by Rep. Blake Moore .
