HIGH SPRINGS, Fla. (WCJB) — High Springs city commissioners are grappling with a nearly $900,000 bill for water treatment plant work that has left the city facing a potential budget crisis and possible tax increases.

On Thursday, the High Springs City Commission met to discuss plans to address the surprise bill.

High Springs had received a grant for water treatment plant renovations, but additional work was needed that exceeded the grant amount. The city is now receiving a bill for $900,000.

Mayor Tristan Grunder said the city officials are unsure if they will be responsible for the full amount, but acknowledged that a tax increase is not off the table if the city must pay.

While Grunder wants to avoid a tax increase, he said taxpayers may feel some impact from the unexpected expense.
