A pregnant dog in active labor was abandoned and found tied to a street sign in Waterbury. Now, police and animal advocates are asking the public to help find who did it.

Waterbury police received a call around 8:12 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, to report a dog tied to a sign near Cherry Street. Officers found a pregnant pit bull struggling through labor, according to police.

Police said “BARC CT, a nonprofit animal rescue, took custody of the pit bull and provided her emergency treatment, but none of her puppies survived.”

The dog is now staying in a private foster home. Police said she is recovering well after the emergency care and the loss of her litter.

Detectives are working to track down whoever left the dog. Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at 203-564-6941. Anonymous tips can be shared with Crime Stoppers at 203-755-1234.

Police said “Desmond’s Army, a nonprofit organization, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the person or people responsible.”
