BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Federal employees will start receiving paychecks again as the government reopens after the longest shutdown in U.S. history , bringing relief to workers who went more than a month without pay.

Pamela Ward, a Social Security worker in Birmingham, said she and her colleagues are expecting a partial paycheck on Monday after not getting paid for over a month.

“We deserve to receive our pay, you know, we’ve been struggling,” Ward said.

Ward said being a federal worker means showing up for the American people no matter what, but working during the 43-day shutdown was difficult.

“To say that we don’t deserve to receive our pay or that they should stop us from working just because it is very difficult to hear,” she said.
