DRENNEN, W.Va. — Gov. Patrick Morrisey memorialized miner Steve Lipscomb on Thursday evening outside Rolling Thunder Mine in Nicholas County.

Lipscomb's body was recovered in the early hours of Thursday following a multi-day search and effort to dewater the flooded mine.

"Steven was a good man," Morrisey said. "One thing I learned about today was that Steven was in the Marine Corps — he actually got a Purple Heart. I didn't know that before today."

Crews had been working around the clock in 12-hour shifts since Saturday to locate Lipscomb. Each shift included about 15 workers underground, eight on the surface coordinating and supplying equipment and another eight staging and fusing a new water line, officials said.
