St. John’s College was defeated 17-16 by Guelph St. James Catholic High School Lions on Thursday at the University of Guelph in the Central Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association semifinal football game.

Leading St. James late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles fell behind when the Lions scored a touchdown with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

St. John’s marched down the field following that score and on the final play of the game, the Eagles attempted a 34-yard field goal attempt that went wide. It was the third field goal miss of the quarter for SJC, including one that was blocked, with each from outside of 30 yards.

St. James and Elmira now play each other for the CWOSSA championship on Tuesday at the University of Guelph at 6 p.m. Both teams will play in an Ontario
