Rhode Island Transportation Director Peter Alviti Jr. blamed private contractors − in full − for the failure of the westbound Washington Bridge while defending the state's near total reliance on outsourced engineering expertise for transportation on Thursday, Nov. 13.
Over five hours of under-oath questioning led by former federal prosecutor Zachary Cunha , Alviti told a Joint General Assembly Oversight Committee that the DOT does not have the capacity to assess whether bridge inspections done by private companies, like the ones done on the Washington Bridge, are adequate or being done correctly.
