TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - After 232 years in production, the U.S. Mint has finally stopped making the penny, marking the end of one of America’s oldest and most recognizable coins.
“I’ll still pick them up and put them in my penny jar,” says Aaron Hinds, an artist in Tyler.
He has always found value in a penny.
“It’s nostalgic, the penny; see a penny, pick it up, lucky pennies, there’s even a bad penny,” says Hinds.
As of Wednesday, the U.S. ended production of the penny.
“I think it’s going to save our government money,” says Hinds.
It costs four cents to make one penny. Discontinuing the penny will save the U.S. Mint around $56 million per year.
“I think it’s just one of those things that we all knew it was going to happen and now here it is,” says Hinds.
