A 12-vehicle crash shut down a major stretch of I-83 in York County on Thursday, Nov. 10, according to PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler.

The first part of the multi-vehicle crash, with reported entrapment, happened around 6:30 p.m. at Exit 39 on I-83 North, Schreffler said in a 7:35 p.m. release. The incident involved 10 passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers.

Traffic was initially diverted off Exit 36 as crews responded to the first crash. Minutes later, a second crash happened in the backlog, forcing the closure point back to Exit 35, according to the update.

By 7:49 p.m., officials confirmed multiple injuries, and the highway was expected to remain closed for several hours.

PennDOT’s traffic system showed I-83 North fully closed between Exit 36 (PA 262 – Fishing Creek) and Exit 39A (PA 114 – Lewisberry Road) beginning at 6:47 p.m. Rubbernecking delays also developed on the southbound side near Exit 39A, according to the traffic alert.
