NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) - The U.S. Mint produced its last penny Wednesday, ending more than 200 years of circulation for the coin.

The decision follows a Trump administration plan to stop minting pennies, which cost four times their value to make.

Businesses and residents are adjusting to handling payments and pricing without the penny.

“A little direction would be nice, so people would know what to do and everyone is on the same page,” said Sally Ritter, assistant manager at Cow Cafe.

Some businesses, such as Mitchell Hardware, are considering how to round prices now, especially with the holiday season coming.
