If used in a dry area, the M8 poses a risk of starting a fire as the grenade has a burn time of at least 105 seconds. The M8, which was developed in the 1940s and used through the 1990s, is also toxic as the grenade produces hydrochloric fumes when ignited, according to the U.S. National Research Council.
