Daniel Billings, the ex-boyfriend of Molly Ticehurst, has pleaded guilty to her murder, a case that has drawn national attention to domestic violence issues in Australia. Ticehurst, a 28-year-old childcare worker, was killed in her home in Forbes, New South Wales, on April 22, 2024. Billings entered his plea during a court appearance via audio-video link from Goulburn jail, where he is currently held.

Billings, 30, also admitted to several other charges, including breaching an apprehended violence order, property damage, and animal cruelty. In exchange for his guilty plea to murder, 12 additional charges, including sexual assault and stalking, were dropped.

During the court session, Billings spoke only to confirm he could hear the proceedings. His lawyer, Diane Elston, stated, "That is to the charge of murder, Mr. Billings enters a plea of guilty." Ticehurst's mother was present in the courtroom, visibly emotional as she listened to the proceedings. Outside the courthouse, about 50 supporters gathered, some wearing T-shirts that read, "She matters." The crowd applauded as Ticehurst's family exited the court.

Tony Ticehurst, Molly's father, expressed gratitude for the community's support. "Every week I’m thankful for the support from the people of Forbes," he said. "But today is a special day, and I really appreciate the support from the people of Forbes and surrounds and all my friends."

Molly Ticehurst was found dead from stab wounds just two weeks after Billings was released on bail, despite facing multiple charges related to domestic violence against her. An interim apprehended violence order had been issued on her behalf prior to her death.

The case has highlighted significant flaws in the justice system, prompting changes to New South Wales bail laws. Following Ticehurst's murder, the government enacted legislation known as "Molly's Law," which requires individuals accused of serious domestic violence to demonstrate why they should not be detained. The law also mandates electronic monitoring for those granted bail and removes the power of court registrars to grant bail in such cases.

Billings is scheduled for arraignment in the New South Wales Supreme Court on December 12, 2025. The delays in the legal proceedings have caused ongoing distress for Ticehurst's family, who have voiced their frustrations publicly.

The tragic circumstances surrounding Ticehurst's death have intensified a national conversation about domestic violence and the need for systemic change to protect victims.
