TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department has abandoned plans to implement a trial run of a gunshot detection system in a neighborhood that has faced challenges with crime.
This comes about a year and a half after the police department announced that the technology could be a tool used to increase public safety and help them respond more efficiently to violent crime.
The department will not deploy ShotSpotter, an acoustic surveillance system that uses sensors to detect and locate gunfire, despite having been awarded federal grant money for a pilot program.
The Tacoma Police Department was awarded an $800,000 federal grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which is a part of the Department of Justice. It was meant to be used for multiple policing technology items, including a
