LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Drivers are bracing for the impacts of the $50 million Interstate 71 expansion project.
Kentucky will be investing the money to widen a two-mile stretch of the interstate. It will add a third lane in both directions from the junction near Frankfort Avenue to Zorn Avenue.
Additionally, there will be a multi-use path installed on Zorn Avenue between I-71 and the Zorn interchange and Mellwood Avenue.
Gov. Andy Beshear believes the benefits will be worth it in the long run.
"It is going to reduce traffic congestion. That's an area I used to live close to and know how it can back up. It's going to improve safety," Beshear said.
Construction is set to begin on Nov. 17.
Drivers should expect changing traffic patterns, lane shifts, and intermittent overnight lane closures.
