Facing effects from years of pollution from cancer-causing chemicals, Ocean County officials are urging New Jersey to localize control over a $450 million payout from the manufacturer responsible for the contamination.
In May, Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration secured the settlement with 3M , a maker of PFAS and PFOS, commonly known as “forever chemicals,” which are slow to break down in the environment and have been linked to various illnesses.
At the time, state officials said the deal was the largest PFAS settlement in New Jersey history, a record broken months later, when chemical giant DuPont and its affiliates agreed to pay $2 billion for clean-up efforts.
