OAKLAND, Calif. - John Beam, Laney College’s athletic director and former head football coach , was shot on the Oakland campus Thursday, school officials confirmed.

His current condition has not been disclosed.

"Wishing the best for John. It's a horrifying event — no school or organization should have to go through it, said Louis Quindlen, board president of the Peralta Community College District, which Laney is a part of.

Beam was shot at the Laney Fieldhouse , located in the 900 block of Fallon Street. The fieldhouse sits behind the main campus, adjacent to the football field, and houses all of the college’s athletic facilities , including Beam’s office.

Oakland Police Assistant Chief James Beere said the gunman has not been caught.
