Police shot and killed a man they say shot at them first on the Upper East Side of Manhattan Thursday night, according to the NYPD.
It started around 7 p.m. near Madison Avenue and 106th Street. A man pointed a gun at a deli worker before stealing that worker’s phone and fleeing the location, police said.
Police said the man then went to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he encountered an off-duty NYPD member who was acting as paid detail at the hospital.
The man was acting disorderly, according to police, and told the NYPD member he had a gun.
When the off-duty NYPD member attempted to escort him out, the man grabbed them from behind and a struggle ensued, police said.
The NYPD member then called for assistance as the man headed down Madison Avenue between 96th and 95th streets.
