In a back and forth matchup between quality teams, Lubbock Cooper edged Del Valle, 45-42, at Del Valle High School in the Class 5A, Division 2 UIL football playoffs.
A late turnover by Del Valle on special teams led to a Pirates score and 45-35 lead. Del Valle scored on a Jake Fette 73-yard run to cut the lead to 45-42 with 2:32 left in the game,. But Lubbock Cooper recovered the onside kick and ran out the final two-plus minutes of the game.
The Pirates led 24-21 at halftime and scored on the final play of the first half on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Rodriguez to Chamayne Johnson.
Johnson also scored on a short touchdown run and Rodriguez also threw touchdown pass to Cade Gant. A 26-yard field goal by Michael Rodriguez was the difference in the halftime lead for the Pirates.
