Purdue was one of the few teams in the country this season with two preseason All-Americans and both of them played up to their billing for the Boilermakers on Thursday at No. 8 Alabama.

Braden Smith poured in 29 points, including 21 in the second half, and Trey Kaufman-Renn added 19 points on 9-for-16 shooting and 15 rebounds in his first game of the season to lead the second-ranked Boilermakers to a 87-80 victory at Coleman Coliseum.

“You gotta be able to make shots and keep them at bay,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “I thought of both of those guys in the first and second half did that for us.”

It was the first top-10 road win in nonconference play for the Boilermakers since Gene Keady beat No. 7 Louisville in December 1982.
