A Western Sydney mayor has slammed the state government after land zoned for up to 50 homes was sold to a religious organisation aiming to build a mosque.
The land in Fairfield has been sold to the Australian Iraqi Muslim Society, inc., who in a letter seen by SkyNews.com.au have told local residents they want to build a mosque on The Horsley Drive.
"Our aim in establishing this mosque is not only to create a place of worship for the Muslim community, but also to build a welcoming and inclusive space that serves the broader Fairfield community,” the letter said.
“One important aspect of our religious practice is the Friday prayer (Jumu'ah), which is the most significant weekly gathering for Muslims. We do understand that there may be an increased flow of people during this time."
